Kherk Ying Chew received her legal education at the National University of Singapore and holds a Master of Laws (First Class Honours) from University of Cambridge (United Kingdom).
She has practiced for more than 3 decades where she handled both contentious and non contentious legal matters. While she advises on all aspects of legal commercial and compliance matters, Kherk Ying Chew stands out in the area of intellectual property (IP) and technology where she assists clients in all areas of IP and technology including data privacy, cyber security, internet and content regulation, information technology, e-commerce and generative AI matters, across wide and diverse range of industries.
In corporate compliance, Kherk Ying Chew advises multinational corporations on developing and managing corporate compliance programmes including anti corruption adequate procedure framework, data protection compliance policy and framework, data breach management plans, dealing with data breaches and cybersecurity incidents and developing AI corporate policies and framework.
Kherk Ying Chew conducts training for board of directors and she speaks regularly at both local and international conferences on a broad range of legal topics including legal issues arising from new emerging technology.
On the contentious front, she acts as senior counsel in many civil disputes including precedent setting cases in the area of intellectual property. As an advocate, she is regularly involved in all stages of dispute before the High Court and the appellate courts.
Kherk Ying Chew is ranked in Band 1 (IP) in Malaysia by Chambers Asia Pacific and is recognized as an “acclaimed figure in the sector” and a lawyer who is ‘really commercial, very practical’ and ‘knows her subject impressively well.” Asia Pacific Legal 500 inducted her into its Hall of Fame for IP and it had commented that she “stands out as an excellent lawyer, who gives good strategic advice and is very capable in the courtroom”.
In 2019, she was honoured as Women Lawyer of the Year at both the ALB Malaysia Law Awards and ALB South East Asia Law Awards and was named as one of the world’s 80 most influential female IP lawyers by The World IP Review. She has also been named among ‘Top 100 Women in Litigation’ by Benchmark Litigation Asia-Pacific and recognized as a Gold Tier practitioner by the World Trademark Review 1000 and by IAM Patent 1000.
